I've never been to New York City but I've seen enough Sex in the City, Law & Order and Casey Neistat vlogs to confidently agree with Jackie Franco: this deck can act as a portal into a magical dreamlike version of NYC.

There are two things I want to highlight about this deck. Firstly, it's very purple. It's more purple than I would normally be able to tolerate. However, despite it's purpleness, it's a sharp talker. A little bit like some of those characters on the TV shows I mentioned earlier. The readings I've done using this deck have been straight to the point, verging on the blunt. So my second point about this deck is, please ignore the bright neon colours. If this would normally turn you off, embrace the palette and this deck will give you great readings.

Midnight City Tarot is RWS inspired but not a clone. The images are modern; there are subway scenes, public landmarks, big yellow taxi cabs and lots of New York skyline. One thing I was concerned about pre-purchase was the little blob people. I can confirm, yes, they are weird. The purple 'ready-brek' glow* around them doesn't help but in the context of the modern neon art, they fit in quite nicely. Do they open up access or dodge diversity? I can't say. It certainly didn't cause me any problems when reading.

The deck comes with a slim guidebook. It's full-colour (more Purple) and the information is succinct. For each card it gives the vibe, a bit about the art and advice upright and reversed. It's written in a story telling manner drawing you into the deck and into this surreal version of NYC.

Now, let's talk about quality. The Midnight City Tarot comes in a sturdy two part box beautifully designed inside and out. The cards are playing card stock, linen texture with a laminate finish that gives a sheen but not a high gloss. They are easy to shuffle, both overhand and riffle but I'd say they are a little bit on the slippery side. They're not edged or gilded. Overall the quality is excellent, as you'd expect from an indie deck.

Pivot!
So if you're looking for something different, even if you don't have any links to NYC, try the Midnight City Tarot. You might find some friendly and familiar sights.
