Deck - Dreamkeepers Tarot
Creator/Artist – Liz Huston
Publisher - Independent
Purchased - 2018

Introduction

This was my very first Kickstarter Deck. I saw it, thought it looked so beautiful and  then clicked to back it. I really didn't do a whole lot of research about Kickstarter. Perhaps if I'd done due diligence, I wouldn't have backed anything. There are stories of Kickstarters not going well or in some cases not appearing at all! With this deck and this creator however, I was in safe hands. Not only did she communicate clearly with all backers, my deck arrived safe and sound exactly when I expected it. So maybe it's best not to let yourself be spooked by negative reviews. Especially as this deck has turned out to be a complete gem.

What's Good?

  • Original mixed media art by the creator of the deck. Liz Huston is a self-taught artist working in LA and produced all of the cards herself based on her own art work over the last ten years
  • The images are very dreamlike and etheral. It's like stepping into another world
  • The colours are soft and muted and relaxing
  • The card stock is good, playing card stock, flexible but strong, standard size
  • The deck comes with a keyword insert but you can also purchase the companion book separately. I would highly recommend the companion book, it is hardback with colour images of every card and original information about the card images and meanings

What's Bad?

  • If you like bright, bold colours, this deck is not for you
  • Packaging is a standard tuck box. However it is one of those with a little fold on the back to make it easier to use and the cards do slide in and out very easily
  • The card back design isn't reversible. Not a problem for me but if you read reversals, do be aware

Stand Out/Favourite Cards

When you first receive this deck and open the box to reveal The Fool, you'll realise how bizarre and wonderful the images are. The VII of Cups is both beautiful and strange.

I love when a deck teaches you something new. Here in the VII of Wands, the image shows how having to constantly fend off oncoming challenges can result in retreating into a fantsy world. X The Fates, instead of the traditional Wheel of Fortune, is a perfect alternative. Liz gives an excellent overview of the Greek mythology in the companion book.

In the Page of swords and the IX of Wands we have perfect depictions of the traditional meanings. The Page's attention is elsewhere and the IX of Wands arms are literally unravelling with stress and exhaustion, yet she's still standing.

The art work is astounding in these cards. In the III of Pentacles we can see two headless figures working together only needing body and soul but showing their common vision in their reflections and in their moon in a jar. In I The Creatrix replaces the traditional Magician. The effervescent figures embodying the magic and creation on step one of the Fool's journey.

Summary

This is the best deck for.......anyone who wants an ethereal and authentic deck that will give deep and clear readings. If you're all about the images and don't give a stuff about the packaging, this deck is perfect. Don't forget to pick up the companion book too.
