The Dark Wood Tarot is a perfect deck for autumn. The thing that surprised me most about this deck is the beautiful colouring. This isn't the kind of gothic horror deck that the title might suggest. It has shades of grey, brown, ochre, green, dusky blue and splashes of red. The kind of classy colour scheme that you'd be happy updating your seasonal wardrobe with.
It won't be on the top of the list when you need a deck to speak to diversity but it does have that Tim Burton kind of style, so if you loved the Dark Mansions Tarot or have been looking forward to the Nightmare Before Christmas deck (also by Abigail Larson), you'll love this one too.
This is a good quality mass market product from Llewellyn so although it doesn't have the same card stock as an independent, it is easier on the hands if you riffle shuffle. The packaging is a large sturdy book-style box with magnetic closure that holds the deck and a full colour guidebook with glossy pages showing each image in a larger size, so you can see all those finer details.

The cards do have an unusual border design. The image is carried all the way to the edge but there is a shaded border with a fine line framing the focal point of each card.

There are lots of interesting and attractive characters and scenes in the deck but one of the cards that stands out for me is the Queen of Pentacles. The way she is sitting at the base of the tree with her legs entangled with fine vines and the bright apple pentacle in her hand is just beautiful. And those apple pentacles are like little bright lights shining out of that suit.

So if you are looking for a reasonably priced deck to refresh your autumn readings, check out the Dark Wood Tarot. You can pick it up quickly and easily from Amazon. I haven't read through the whole guide book as yet but the story of the Shadow Witch is tempting me in and the readings I've used the deck for so far have been clear and enlightening. The Dark Wood Tarot is gem of a deck that I would say is an autumn/winter essential.
