Top 10 Halloween Decks

10/9/2022

Halloween is the time for all things spooky and scary. Right now, they're selling haunted houses in M&S and skeletons in Sainsbury's. So, as a tarot reader, this is a great opportunity to turn to those decks with that little extra scream factor. These are the top ten decks from my tarot library that I'll be delving into as the October nights draw in.

10. The Bones Arcana

This is an RWS inspired deck filled with our skeletal friends. It's a black, white and red colour palette that will definitely get you in the mood for the season.

9. Tarot Z

There's nothing more halloween than a zombie apocalypse, is there? This deck has some shocking scenes on the cards and the glossy finish makes them look like they're photos that have been taken for tomorrows papers. Could it be real?

8. Deviant Moon Tarot

This is a well known deck for many but I couldn't do a top ten Halloween collection without it. Weird, strange and slightly uncomfortable, this deck works for the season and all year round.

7. The Bohemian Gothic Tarot

A spooky castle and a headless horseman are just two of the classic images in this outstanding deck. Sadly, it's out of print but if you're lucky enough to own a copy, this is the time of year to break it out and show it off.

6. Trionfi Della Luna Paradoxical

Just like its brother in the asylum, the Deviant Moon, the Trionfi Della Luna has all sorts in there, here are just two of a selection of little devils available for your viewing pleasure. For me, this is absolutely an all year round deck but get a black light out for the halloween readings.

5. Dark Wood Tarot

Pointy hats and gnarly claws, twisted trees and strange little dragons, the Dark Wood has them all. The thing great thing about this deck that'll see you using it all through the autumn and winter is the stunning colour palette.

4. The Darkness of Light

This is another RWS inspired deck but some of the cards, in particular the majors, really fit into the horror of halloween. This is a great alternative that you don't often see on the top ten lists. Again it has the added benefit of one that you can use whenever a darker aesthetic takes your fancy.

3. Santa Muerte Tarot

Inspired by the Day of the Dead, this colourful deck can be found in two sizes, mini and full size. Its busy with skeletons and covered in flowers, just like the festival itself. Start using it at Halloween and let it carry you through till November.

2. The Halloween Tarot

The ultimate tarot deck for the season, no? Hang on, why is this at number 2? Well it's a great deck but it's been around for a while now. If you haven't picked this one up yet, it's definitely worth the money even though it'll be back in its box by Nov 1st.

1. Ghosts & Spirits Tarot

Ahhh, so this is the deck keeping the Halloween Tarot off the top spot. Why the Ghosts & Spirits? Well, if only for that one card, the Five of Swords, showing Tam O'Shanter himself speeding away from the witches. This isn't what the guide book says but the beauty of the tarot is that you can create your own associations with the cards and this deck gives you ample opportunity to conjure up all sorts of spooks for the season.
